When retiring police Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) tackles a final case with the aid of newly transferred David Mills (Brad Pitt), they discover a number of elaborate and grisly murders. They soon realize they are dealing with a serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who is targeting people he thinks represent one of the seven deadly sins. Somerset also befriends Mills' wife, Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), who is pregnant and afraid to raise her child in the crime-riddled city.

Sin is rampant but goes largely undetected; until the sinners are subjected to brutal murders from a self-supposed righteous hand. This film is (I believe) unintentionally paradoxical too, the relationship Pitt and Freeman have on screen is mirrored off screen. The seasoned detective takes on the rookie cop; the seasoned Morgan in his pristine maturity takes under his wing a young and ambitious Pitt. Morgan sets the pace for the film, and Pitt follows. Needless to mention Spacey’s superb performance adds great texture to the film, an antagonist with genuine conviction. Riveting film overall.
